Paediatric Therapy & Treatment Plans

This service is available at the Auckland Park & Muelmed branch of Rita Henn and Partners. Our secure paediatric unit is a dedicated unit for paediatric rehabilitation. There is a dedicated integrated ward and therapy gym area. Specialized team skills and technology are available to maximize your child’s potential for recovery.

The comprehensive therapies and treatment we offer is complemented by our caring culture. We establish personal connections with our patients and their families beginning at the hospital bedside.

The team consists of Physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Social workers who follow an interdisciplinary treatment approach and often combine therapies for maximum benefit. The unit specializes in treating patients with acquired neurological conditions including Near Drowning resulting in anoxic brain damage; traumatic brain injuries, Guillain Barre Syndrome, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury and poly trauma.

Your child’s length of stay depends on individual needs and goals. A comprehensive assessment will be conducted, followed by the therapy team develop an individualised programme for your child.

This may include the following:

  • Individual therapy sessions
  • Group therapy sessions
  • Outings
  • Home and school visits where appropriate
  • A dark room, for sensory input and modulation
  • An NDT and sensory approach is taken to maximize each child’s potential
  • Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
  • The Speech Therapists are trained and experienced in the treatment of paediatric dysphagia and use Vitalstim in conjunction with traditional swallowing therapy when appropriate
  • Aquatherapy when appropriate
  • Carer and family training
  • Prescription of appropriate assistive devices and mobility equipment
